Who Benefits When You Play Small

I

I was at a conference recently, surrounded by people who seemed to carry the room with ease. I found myself quietly sitting in the back, feeling small, holding back my voice, my energy, my presence. I felt as if I was being swallowed up by the room.

And then I felt it. A gentle, unmistakable whisper inside me. Who is benefiting from you playing small?

It brought everything to a hard stop. I had to ask myself, who truly benefits when I dim my light? Who gains when I stay quiet, when I shrink my ideas, when I hesitate to step forward? And then the next thought came just as clearly. Who would benefit if you played large?

It wasn’t a rebuke. It was filled with love. It was an invitation. It was a reminder that my voice, my energy, my presence matters. By shrinking myself I am not protecting anyone else. I am simply depriving the world of what only I can give.

Playing large doesn’t mean dominating the room or being louder than everyone else. It means leaning into my God-given gifts, speaking with courage, sharing my perspective, and moving forward with intention. It means being fully present in spaces I have allowed myself to feel small. It means trusting that I have this amazing opportunity to live in the moment and embrace the calling God has for me. I walk with His love and light.

As I reflected on this, I felt a shift inside me. God designed me to shine, not to hide. To hold back is to rob others of the light He wants to flow through me. As Matthew 5:14-16 reminds us, we are the light of the world. We are called to let our light shine before others, so that our actions and presence bring glory to God and bless those around us.

I am choosing to play large. Not for recognition, not for applause, but because my presence, my energy, my voice can bless someone who needs it. Ephesians 2:10 reminds me that we are His workmanship, created for good works, prepared in advance for us to walk in. By stepping fully into what I have been given, I am living the purpose He placed me here for.

Affirmation:
I CAN do hard things. I DO belong in any space I choose to occupy. I walk in my purpose and I embrace what God has in store for me.

I am learning to honor the gifts He has given me, leaning into them without hesitation. Philippians 2:15 says we can shine among others like stars in the sky. That is exactly what I want to do, not for myself, but for the world God has placed me in.

For you were called to shine, not to blend in. Let your light illuminate the spaces you occupy, and never doubt the impact you have when you show up fully.

Note: Your voice may shake. Your body may shake. Fear may creep in. Things may appear scary, and they probably are. But guess what? YOU CAN DO IT! As Romans 8:31 reminds us, if God is for us, who can be against us?

I am thinking of all who have felt or may feel small as I write this and it is my hope and prayer that God will show you the value of your voice, your presence and your energy. May you embrace the light and love that is within you and opportunities that are before you.

With so much love,

Alvina
